Potty Training Twins & Multiples

Potty training multiples can be very demanding and more challenging than training a single child. The whole **process is just the same as with training a single child**, but with slight alterations.

**All of your children may not be ready at the same time.** If they aren't then **just train the ones that are.** If you have twins and only one is ready to be potty trained just train the one that is ready.

Find which ones that are ready by watching out for them displaying signs that are described in chapter 1.

You will need exactly the same articles described in Chapter 2, but just double, triple or quadruple the amount. When buying the potties, however it may well be a good idea to buy the exact same potty for all of them to avoid fighting between them of which one wants which potty.

The seat attachment solution may be the most cost effective if you have multiples – so consider if that's appropriate for your children.

## 5.1 Potty Training Multiples Separately

If you are potty training just one of your multiples or twins then follow the same steps detailed in the chapters above.

TIP: It could be a good idea when you are creating the routine with the potty in the initial stages that you involve the others if they are willing.

However when it comes to starting the phase where they stop using diapers altogether, and you are putting them on the potty every 20 minutes, you really **need to get someone else to take them out for the day.** You need to do this so you can **focus totally on the child** that is being potty trained.

When their siblings return avoid using the reward system that you have put in place. The siblings that are not ready yet will not understand why they are not getting the same rewards. Keep the verbal praise more low key when the others are around, to avoid singling out the one that isn't quite there yet.

When each of your multiples starts displaying the signs of readiness then you can start the potty training process with them. In fact having the one that has already been trained around could help as the others may want to be like the one that you've just trained.

## 5.2 Potty Training Multiples Together

If you are wanting to potty train your multiples altogether, to get it over with, then you need to do as much preparation as you can to make the process run as smoothly as possible.

WARNING: Be aware that it's not going to be easy potty training multiples altogether, but it's not impossible.

**BE POSITIVE. You will do it!**

The best way of doing it is by waiting until ALL of your multiples are ready. Them all being ready will make the whole potty training process run much more smoothly and painlessly. You are also going to need someone to help you. If your partner can't help, then bring in granny or a friend.

The method will remain the same, whether you are training multiples or a single child. Repeat the steps above. However remember:

* While having the twins or multiples in the same room, **keep them apart as much as possible.**

This is because **each child needs one to one time** so that they can listen and focus on what they are doing. Together they will only distract one another.

* While you should **praise and encourage** when they have used the potty, **keep it more low key than what you would with the single child.**

This is because if one is doing really well but the other isn't then that will only make the one that's not doing so well feel bad and will make the process more difficult.

* **Do NOT use sweets or toys as rewards** when potty training multiples. The others will not understand why they are receiving the same. **DO use the wall chart and make the stickers their rewards.**

* **Do NOT introduce competition or comparisons between the children.** This just puts extra pressure on the child that may not be taking to potty training as quickly as the others, making potty training harder than it already is.

* Make sure that **those that are helping** train your children are **following the process EXACTLY as you.** Following the same routine will minimize confusion amongst your children.
